Aochamub is new NBC DG
The decision to appoint Aochamub, he said, was based on his experience and a proven track-record in the communications and marketing sphere. The board believes that Aochamub is the ideal candidate for the plum, but severely criticised, parastatal job.Cabinet approved Aochamub’s appointment as of August 1, 2010.
“After a very thorough recruitment process, which tested the competencies, qualifications, experience, key outputs, measurements, skills, attributes, as well as the affirmative action status, Mr Albertus Aochamub was the most successful candidate from a list of 12 applicants,” said Thieme.Aochamub is a seasoned professional, with nearly 12 years of senior management experience in the Namibian communications and financial services industries. His experience will be a critical building block in driving the transformation agenda of NBC into the future, he added.
On his part, Aochamub said: “I am very delighted to be granted this opportunity to become part of a tremendous team of people, who keep our nation informed, educated and entertained. I do not doubt the enormity of the task at hand, but I remain hopeful that with the involvement of all role players, we shall succeed.” He said, as long as there is openness and transparency, he sees no reason why the NBC should not become a world-class broadcaster.
Aochamub beat 12 other candidates for the position, and becomes the ninth DG of the NBC in its 20-year history of existence. He replaces Yvonne Boois, who has been acting in that capacity since January this year. She in turn replaced Mathew /Gowaseb, who left the NBC after his contract ended at the beginning of the year.Aochamub is no stranger to managerial positions. Before MTC, he had stints with First National Bank as Corporate Communications Manager in 2004. He was also the manager of Telecom Namibia Internet Service Provider Company, I-Way.
Last year, speculations were abound that Aochamub was on the verge of signing an employment contract with the NBC, but negotiations crumbled following non-agreement on remuneration. Aochamub, however, denied this was the reason, but would not say why he did not join the NBC then. Thieme could only reveal that Aochamub will not be taking home N$1 million, as was widely reported, but stated that the figure is between N$500 000 and not more than a million. He said the salary package is within the approved State-Owned Enterprises’ remunerative structures for parastatal heads.
