Namibia to set up condom dispensers in shebeens
The initiative will be headed by the Ministry of Health and Social Services with support from United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The aim is to increase condom availability in shebeens were HIV-risk is increased by factors like alcohol intake and peer pressure. As part of the support of a risk reduction intervention in shebeens, the UNICEF has granted support to the Condom Unit of the ministry of health in the design of a new condom dispenser.
The dispenser is designed to provide a friendlier way to display and provide free condoms and HIV-related information to shebeen clients, particularly young people and simultaneously increasing access and availability in public places. Reports show that shebeens are places where most Namibian young people socialise and are more likely to get involved in sex. However free condoms and HIV and AIDS awareness messages are not readily available in shebeens hence the new initiative.
In addition to offering free condoms which are a central part of Namibia's national response to HIV and AIDS, the dispenser provides a link to HIV counseling and testing, advertising a particular SMS number enabled to locate the nearest HIV testing centre, and also displays leaflets and broachers. The health ministry is piloting the installation of a first set of 100 condom dispensers which will be installed in some of the most popular shebeens in the Katutura settlement area. The ministry will also ensure refilling, monitoring and evaluation.
