NEWS spreads the news again
ROAN NEWS, the biannual magazine of the Namibian Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS), has just been published as a special edition dealing with the sustainable use of wildlife. Articles in this magazine are written by well-known conservationists dealing with such issues as wildlife translocation and sustainable use in conservancies, elephant hunting, tourism and the economics around hunting, to name but a few.
NEWS is the oldest and largest non-profit environmental membership organisation in Namibia with its mission to conserve the natural environment and to promote appropriate protection, wise and sustainable use of natural resources and sustainable development in Namibia. It was established in 1966 under the Namibian branch of the then Wildlife Society of South Africa, achieving autonomy as the Wildlife Society of Namibia in 1977, with a name change and restructuring in 2007 leading to what has now become NEWS.
“Apart from private memberships, NEWS also has a number of corporate members indicating a trend towards social and environmental responsibility by larger organisations,” says NEWS chairperson, Peter Cunningham. “Without these memberships, NEWS would be hard pressed to sponsor wildlife-related research and environmental awareness campaigns,” says Cunningham. Projects currently benefiting from NEWS grants include two waste management challenges in Etosha National Park dealing with black-backed jackal problems in the tourist camps and the recycling of camp waste.
